I often think about the studies we had with the Chevra around power and magic of word. We have learned before that G’d created this World with the words, but in our class we also learned that each one of us has a power of creating and destroying our own world using “magic” of words. Every one of you probably experienced your world destroyed by ugly, cruel words spoken carelessly by someone who is/was important in your life. All of us were uplifted by inspirational words of great, enlightened souls, and by just simple, kind words offered to us by our friends or just by-passers. Personally I know these were not by-passers at all, it was Elijah, but I digress.
In a spirit of “The Evolution meets Tradition”, motto articulated to me by Maggid Shir’az, I would like to pose a question – What is a word? from a perspective of the world of matter.
- A sound or a combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing, that symbolizes and communicates a meaning and may consist of a single morpheme or of a combination of morphemes.
and then Sound?
sound 1
 (sound) KEY
NOUN:
- Vibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing.
- Transmitted vibrations of any frequency.
- The sensation stimulated in the organs of hearing by such vibrations in the air or other medium.
Now we are up to something – Sound, Vibration. Modern physics teaches us that all known matter is a vibration, and that includes the matter of my body. So when the sounds of a right music combine with a sounds of right words and resonate with vibration of my body, it can create a magic phenomena of harmonic resonance, and these words just give me chills:
There’s a blaze of light in every word.
It doesn’t matter which you heard.
The holy or the broken Hallelujah.I did my best, it wasn’t much.
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch.
I told the truth. I didn’t come to fool ya.
And even though it all went wrong,
I’ll stand before the lord of song
with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah.
Now try them with the music – The video.

Beautiful, Tsviy.
Modern Physics teaches what has been known to the Kabbalists for centuries – that all matter is vibration. Or as our masters knew, the universe was created through words, and that each of the Hebrew letters is a building block (similar to the way atoms are used to form a molecule) that when combined in just the right way with others, creates the archetypes of the things that in turn become the manifest world. All this takes place on an energetic level in world of Yetsirah.
We know that Hebrew is a root-based language, and this is further indication that creation happened by the skillful combining of letters – energy units – into shoreshim (roots) – that create the concepts first in Yesod… the sphere of formation. So here we have again an ancient understanding being borne out in modern science. Everything manifest is energy/vibration.
One of the oldest books in our tradition is the Sefer Yetsirah. This book speaks along these lines, discussing how it was that the universe was created through letters and words, in other words, vibrations. A word of caution though, you don’t want to read the Sefer Yetsirah if you are in any sort of a vulnerable place. It’s a powerful book that will rock your world.
